Postcard from El Fenn, Marrakech

Tuesday, June 16, 2015

El Fenn Marrakech is an absolute artist's paradise. Tucked away behind the antiquated walls of the Medina, its unassuming front door opens to a winding Riad bursting with a rainbow of color at every turn. Formerly a derelict courtyard, it's no wonder this place feels like it's brimming with stories to tell from a brilliant past life. I couldn't believe my luck when Mr & Mrs Smith confirmed that I would be staying there my last two nights in Marrakech. It was the perfect way to bid adieu and solidify my new found love for this majestic city...

When I arrived to check in I was greeted by their marketing manager, also serendipitously named Megan, who was as lovely and rich in character as the colors of the hotel. I knew I was in for a great stay at El Fenn. She explained that the hotel's co-founder, Vanessa Branson, curated all the art in each room from her private collection. Moreover, she is responsible for creating the Marrakech Biennale beginning in 2005, uniting art enthusiasts from the world over. You can imagine how I felt hearing all this, sitting in the courtyard with my sketchbook and markers in tow. It was as if I finally found a new home away from home...

Postcard from La Mamounia, Marrakech

Sunday, June 14, 2015

On May 21st, I embarked on a week long magical journey through Marrakech, Morocco with boutique hotel experts Mr & Mrs Smith. The purpose of the trip was to experience the city through the distinctive lens of 3 different properties. When I learned that I would be staying at La Mamounia hotel for part of my stay, I knew I would be delving into the world of luxury. I had seen photos of its interior through Jimmy Choo's recent shoe campaign with Zanita and Tuula Vintage, but NOTHING compares to experiencing this magnificent 5 star retreat in real life.

La Mamounia is located in the heart of the Medina, tucked away behind fortress like walls. When you enter through its towering gate doors, you leave the stress of the city behind you, and are immediately enveloped in the finest sensory experience one could only imagine. From the signature Fragonard Dattes fragrance diffusing the air, to the miraculous zellige tile works, you can't help but feel transported to another date and time...

NBA x High Fashion Redesign with @BleacherReport!!

Monday, June 8, 2015

I can't thank you all enough for the encouraging comments I received on yesterday's post, both here and on instagram. Your kindness and support reminds me why I started my blog in the first place: to share my journey with all of you!! Today marks the first day of rising above the bad and stepping into the good, starting with the launch of my project with Bleacher Report!! For 6 months I worked quietly behind the scenes to redesign 10 NBA team jerseys, inspired by high end menswear designer muses. So head on over to the Bleacher Report to see Dwyane Wade, Steph Curry, Russell Westbrook and more illustrated in the Travel Write Draw way...

A Little Bit of Real Talk...A Big Lesson Learned

Sunday, June 7, 2015

I don't usually write posts like this, but for the past couple days I've been between tears and bouts of anger, so I'm turning to the one place that is most therapeutic for me, my blog. Shortly after fashion week this past February, I was put in touch with a major blog agency here in NYC with the potential of being represented not only as an illustrator but as a brand, Travel Write Draw. This hybrid role of illustrator and "influencer" that I'm straddling is still incredibly niche and rarely do art agencies represent both.

About a half an hour before my meeting with said agency, I was told that the in-person "interview" had been changed to a phone call and to ring this person on their cell. Within the first few seconds on the phone I was asked to tell my story, in other words, what Travel Write Draw is all about. Not for a second did I think I was doing anything other than selling myself with the hopes of being signed...
